The 2017 duet “Rainbowland” featuring Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus was nixed from a first-grade spring concert in Wisconsin after it was determined it could be too controversial.
Here are some of the lyrics:
Living in a Rainbowland
Where you and I go hand in hand
Oh, I’d be lying if I said this was fine
All the hurt and the hate going on here
We are rainbows, me and you
Every color, every hue
Let’s shine on through
Together, we can start living in a Rainbowland
School District of Waukesha Superintendent Jim Sebert told FOX News: “It was determined that ‘Rainbowland’ could be perceived as controversial.” One parent, Sarah Schindler, said, “I think, for some reason, the district sees rainbows as a political symbol.”
Parton summed up the song to Taste of Country in 2017 like this: “It’s really about if we could love one another a little better or be a little kinder, be a little sweeter, we could live in rainbow land. It’s really just about dreaming and hoping that we could all do better.”
Melissa Tempel, a first grade teacher at Heyer Elementary School, told USA Today: “It’s such a fun song and they just immediately took to it.” When she found out the song was cut she said the students were “so sad.”
