Wilton Manors welcomed two new officers to its police force.
Police Chief Gary Blocker introduced Assistant Chief Darren Brodsky and Code Compliance Supervisor Abel Alberro at the May 26 city commission meeting.
“We are so grateful to have such experienced and talented individuals help lead our department,” Blocker said in a press release. “Assistant Chief Brodsky and Supervisor Alberro will help us continue to enhance public safety and code compliance operations in our growing Island City.”
Brodsky brings two decades of experience at the Plantation Police Department, where he served in multiple roles and assignments including road patrol officer, sergeant, school resource officer, internal affairs sergeant, street crimes sergeant, SWAT operator and commander, lieutenant, detective, captain and deputy police chief. Brodsky holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of South Florida and a master’s degree in public administration from Florida Atlantic University. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and a member of the Broward County Chiefs of Police Association and Florida Police Chiefs Association.
The salary range for the assistant police chief position is $76,310 to $133,433.
“Everybody’s been very kind to me so far and I’m very excited to work for this amazing city,” Brodsky told the commission.
Alberro was plucked from the City of West Park’s code enforcement department. His story involves running a food truck catering business in Miami-Dade County for 25 years before joining the City of Doral’s code compliance operations in 2007.
The salary range for the code compliance supervisor position is $43,311 to $65,997.
“I’m here to work for you guys and the well-being of the citizens,” Alberro told commissioners Tuesday night. Alberro said he was eager to get to work “beautifying the city” and handling vacation rentals.
Many of the public comments at Tuesday’s meeting involved frustrations over adult parties at vacation rental properties and speeding vehicles. Mayor Scott Newton said another hire is needed for code operations to function adequately.
“Coming up next month we’re going to talk about the budget and hopefully we can get another code person on board because I just think it’s needed in today’s world,” Newton said.
