In terms of the debate of the trans community in Florida, GOP lawmakers have made it a point to focus on minors – until now.

If signed into law, House Bill 1421, titled “Gender Clinical Interventions” would restrict gender-affirming care for adults.

Among some of the provisions:

–Trans adults would be required to submit a written consent form to their doctors each time they have an appointment.

– The legislation would make it easier for patients to sue their doctors within a 30-year statute of limitations.

– People born in Florida would not be allowed to amend their birth certificate to reflect a sex that is different from their sex assigned at birth.

“The butchering of children will be illegal in Florida, Florida citizens will not be obligated to pay for the sexual mutilation of adults, and those tricked into this evil will have 30 years to sue those who misled them,” GOP Rep. Randy Fine tweeted. “That’s HB 1421 and I am proud to file it.”

Equality Florida slammed the bill.

“HB 1421 is an assault on medical freedom and will do immeasurable harm to trans Floridians. The vile commentary spouted in today’s hearing underscores the transphobic animus at the core of this legislation,” the organization tweeted. “This is cruelty being used as political currency.”

House Bill 1421 cleared its first legislative hurdle last week being approved in a 12-5 vote by the House Healthcare Regulatory Subcommittee.

Gender-affirming health care for trans individuals is supported by most major accredited medical organizations including the American Medical Association, and American Psychological Association.
