As a recovering "cathaolic" and more precisely as a proud practicing atheist, I find myself in uncharted territory. I despise organized religions. Everywhere you turn somebody is killing, bombing, terrorizing in the name of God. A god, whose existence has never been proven, and most importantly nowadays, does not have a Facebook page or a Twitter account.

Time Magazine favorably chose Pope Francis as its Person of the Year.  For the LGBT community, though, from South Florida, to Seattle, it is a no brainer. The Person of the Year is Edith ‘Edie’ Windsor, a profile in courage and conscience.

Beginning this week, SFGN commences the daunting task of selecting individuals who have distinguished themselves in our community, commencing with this week’s choice of Wilton Manors City Commissioner Chris Caputo as our Person of the Year.

Shevrin Jones joined the Florida Senate in November a lot differently than when he first became a 29-year-old state representative nearly a decade ago.

Each year, since its inception, SFGN has chosen one national figure as its ‘Person of the Year.’ Whether it was the Pope, or Tim Cook, the choices have not been easy.

Call them old-fashioned (or perhaps out of shape), but you won’t find many elected officials celebrating their 40th birthday bash in just an orange Speedo.

Each year SFGN selects a Person of the Year, so keep on eye out on them every year.
