Organizers of the two-year-old Gay8 LGBTQ street festival in Miami are declaring victory after meeting with city of Miami officials late last week.

The Gay8 Festival is back for another year! Gay8 is a free Latin LGBT art, music and food street festival in Miami.  The second annual one-day festival will take place on Jan. 15 where “Calle Ocho” (8^th Street) in Miami’s “Little Havana” district is transformed into a grand street party where people from all backgrounds are welcome to participate with opportunities for connection.

Think of the Gay8 Festival on Miami's Calle Ocho as a "Pride [celebration] on steroids." That's how organizer Damian Pardo describes the event, "which is really about bringing all parts of the community together for one day of fun in Little Havana," he said.

An artist was recently chosen for The Murals at Equality Park. It’s an exciting venture. And I am confident it’s going to look spectacular. 

But there’s one glaring issue with it — an ArtServe-coordinated jury chose a straight male artist. 

Organizers of the two-year-old Gay8 celebration on Miami’s Calle Ocho on Tuesday cancelled the 2018 festival after city officials granted a permit to a competing event planned for the same date in January.

The festival, founded by a group of community volunteers led by Damian Pardo and Joe Cardona, had been held during the three-day Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend in 2016 and 2017. In its first year, Gay8 attracted 17,000 people and this January drew more than 30,000 attendees to Little Havana.
