Legendary Artist to Make Two Guest Appearances in Coconut Grove

An impressive collection by American pop-icon, Peter Max will be available for viewing and acquisition at the Max in the Grove Gallery in Coconut Grove beginning May 8 and extending through May 16. Fans of Max’s work will have the opportunity to meet Peter Max himself during two appearances scheduled for Saturday, May 15 and Sunday, May 16.

With paintings on exhibition in hundreds of museums and galleries worldwide, Max and his vibrant colors have become part of the fabric of contemporary culture. Max has been successively called a Pop Icon, Neo Fauvist, Abstract Expressionist and the United State’s “Painter Laureate.”

This exhibit features some of Max’s most celebrated paintings including the Barak Obama portraits, the iconic Statue of Liberty and his new life size portrait of former Miami Heat superstar Shaquille O’Neil. Max’s famous “Flag” pieces, “Umbrella Man” and the prestigious 10 Cent Stamp bearing the title “Preserve the Environment” will also be on display.

Max talks about his latest project. “I wanted to make the painting of Shaq larger than life,” said Max. “But painting him to his actual dimensions was mind boggling itself. When people saw it at my studio they couldn’t believe that it was just life size.”

Taking on a life size portrait of the 7’1” NBA star seems large, but pales in comparison to some of Max’s other projects including painting a $160 million Boeing 777 for Continental Airlines and a 500 ft. stage for the Woodstock ‘99 Music Festival.

“Shaq’s great personality matches his physical stature,” states Max. “He has been a pleasure to get to know and I am proud to have him as a new friend.”

In addition to the works on display during the exhibition, Max has also created portraits of six U.S. Presidents including Carter, Reagan, Clinton and Bush, The Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Mickey Mantle and Muhammad Ali, just to name a few.
