Russian film distributors apparently censored Disney and Pixar’s first openly gay character in the new animated movie, “Onward.”
The first lesbian character, a cyclops police officer named Specter has a girlfriend, which she briefly mentions in the one scene she appears in. But according to Moscow Times, viewers said Russia’s version doesn’t mention Specter’s gender, and refers to her girlfriend as “partner,” two changes that erase the sexuality of the character.
“Presumably, Disney’s Russia branch tried to avoid unnecessary problems with the anticipated project’s release,” Russian movie site Kinopoisk.ru wrote about the apparent censorship.
Disney representatives in Russia declined Moscow Times’ request for comment. Russia also deleted gay scenes from the Elton John biopic, Rocketman.
