A man accused of killing a lesbian woman was released on bail, sparking activists to petition against his release.

Activist group Triangle Project put out a petition against Bongile Joni, who was charged with the Jan. 1 murder of Noxolo Xakeka, according to the Sunday Times. Nearly 800 people signed the petition asking to deny bail to Joni and reverse the decision.

“He lives in the community where the victim resided and where her friends who were there that night still live,” said Triangle Project’s Sharon Ludwig. “So they can easily become a target for intimidation.”

The judge postponed further court proceedings until May 23 to allow for further investigation and to gather a lone outstanding witness statement, according to the Times.
