Ollie Roberts, 21, was the Queen of England’s first openly gay footman. He was demoted for drawing too much media coverage towards him, and after a couple of days, he quit.

Roberts was the focus of articles in gay publications, which were mostly praising the royal family for its demonstration of equality, according to Daily Beast.

Generally, employees aren’t allowed to talk to the media, and he was allegedly tipping off reporters, so he was demoted because “his profile was becoming too high and he wasn’t there to draw attention to himself,” a royal insider told the Sun.

An LGBT rights campaigner told the Daily Beast it’s more likely that the palace doesn’t want to have openly gay employees.

“It is consistent with decades of homophobia by the queen’s inner circle,” he said.
