For the first time in the country’s history, transgender people will run in Pakistan’s general election.
At least 13 trans people will run in the general election, according to Gay Star News. The elections for those positions will be held on July 25.
“It is about time that the transgender community of Pakistan has rightful representation,” Qamar Naseem, a member of the Chief Minister’s Special Community on Rights of the Transgender Persons, said to The Express Tribune.
The announcement comes as Pakistan recently expanded the rights of transgender people to provide more public protections.
