Sacked Australian rugby player Israel Folau opened a fundraiser for his legal defense, saying Rugby Australia fired him in an act of religious discrimination.
Over an Instagram post, Folau, who is a Christian, said gay people, among others, would go to hell. And after receiving about $530,000 on GoFundMe, his page was shut down, according to the BBC. All donations will be refunded.
"As a company, we are absolutely committed to the fight for equality for LGBTIQ+ people and fostering an environment of inclusivity," said GoFundMe spokeswoman Nicola Britton, according to BBC. "While we welcome GoFundMe's engaging in diverse civil debate, we do not tolerate the promotion of discrimination or exclusion."
Despite Folau’s belief that his contract was terminated because of his religion, Rugby Australia says he violated the “respectful use of social media” contract rule by making the anti-gay post.
