Senator Penny Wong could be the highest ranking gay Asian politician in Australian Parliament.
That’s if the opposition Labor Party wins an election this week, and Wong becomes the foreign minister, according to CNN. Wong, 50, said her win would send a message to the world about Australia as a multicultural nation.
"What would be significant... is what it says about us. What it says about who we are," Wong said in a speech, according to CNN. "Narratives matter, as do perceptions. There are times when Australia's past attitudes on race can be evoked in ways which are neither accurate nor helpful."
The contested election will be held on May 18. Wong would be the third woman to take on the role of foreign minister.
