This week read about Botswana's government attempting to overturn a verdict that decriminalized gay sex, and Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro mocking LGBT rights in instant messages.

Botswana Appeals Ruling On Gay Sex

Justices in Botswana postponed a decision in a case in which the government is attempting to overturn a 2019 verdict that decriminalized homosexual sex, citing the need for further research and debate.

Letsweletse Motshidiemang, a university student, originally initiated the lawsuit, and his attorneys claimed that the legislation should be repealed because society had evolved and homosexuality was more generally accepted.

Sidney Pilane, who represented the state in the Court of Appeal, said there was no indication that people's opinions had altered.

Activists argue that the court is the appropriate venue to handle the situation since it has the most resources to safeguard people's rights.

"Politicians are afraid of losing elections. We can't give the responsibility of protecting the minority to the majority," Cindy Kelemi, the executive director of human rights advocacy organization BONELA, said to Reuters.

On the instant messaging service WhatsApp, Brazil’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, made homophobic slurs, while mocking LGBT rights protestors on a new number.

According to PinkNews, he sent a slew of messages to his acquaintances, claiming anything from that the COVID-19 vaccination will make people "turn into alligators" to that "young individuals [had died] of Pfizer."

After radio station Jovem Pan reported on just five examples of adolescents who died recently, two of whom had not even been vaccinated with a single dosage, the president laced into the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, which is now being distributed by the federal government.

Bolsonaro then went after minimalist artist Rogério Skylab, who said in an interview that he had had sexual intercourse with males "three times," but that he is heterosexual.

"Up to three times you can," the president retorted.
