In Colombia's Congressional elections March 13, a record number of LGBT candidates won their seats.

With this historic victory, LGBT representation in Colombia's Congress will increase from two to six members. Caroline Giraldo is the first lesbian ever elected to the House of Representatives and the first LGBT person elected to Congress from Risaralda. Susana Boreal, Andrés Cancimance, Alejandro García, and María del Mar Pizarro are the first gay members of Congress elected from their respective departments.

In Colombia's Congressional election, 24 LGBT individuals ran, an increase of more than 50% over the previous year's 14 LGBT candidates. Ten of the candidates who ran this year, including Giraldo and Cancimance, were trained by the LGBTQ Victory Institute.

“For far too long, the LGBTQ community in Colombia has lived without equitable representation in Congress. This historic election exemplifies growing momentum for equality in the country,” said Director of Global Programs at LGBTQ Victory Institute Alhelí Partida, according to Victory Institute.
