Bermuda recently challenged a law in local courts putting a ban on gay marriage, but they decided to appeal to the London High Court to uphold the ban.

They filed the appeal to the Privy Council, the highest appeals court, on Thursday, according to NBC. There are thousands in the conservative island that would side with the ban on gay marriage, and the government said it wants to represent those people.

"Constitutional issues are important issues and this Government wants to get it right," the government said in a statement on Thursday.

But LGBT rights activists say this is a step in the wrong direction.

“This is a cynical, bigoted, hypocritical attack on the rights and freedoms of others," Tony Brannon, a gay rights activist in Bermuda told NBC.
