When a group of Trump supporters waved flags and yelled slurs at bar patrons Tuesday night in Wilton Manors, a violinist responded with music.
The group of about a dozen supporters was across the street from the Gym sports bar, chanting support for President Donald Trump, “we live here too,” and obscenities through a megaphone.
The scene was captured on Facebook Live by Stephen Neil, who splits his time between Wilton Manors and Greenville, SC, from his apartment. He then went down to the street to film.
“I said, you know, these people want attention so I’m not going to give it to them,” he told SFGN. “But then when they were on their megaphone and saying all these hateful things, I said ‘You know what, I want all of my conservative friends to see why us liberals are so ready for change.’ It’s not that the Republican Party is bad at its core, but it’s who’s leading it right now is just terrible.”
Neil said that the group of 10 to 12 protesters called passersby and patrons at the Gym and The Pub faggots, pussy lickers, and child molesters.
According to Wilton Manors Police, two 911 calls were made to the department that Trump supporters were “harassing” patrons. Officers responded to the scene, monitoring the “peaceful rallies between Republicans and Democrats,” according to the dispatch report. The protesters never crossed the street, but continued yelling.
Neil decided to retaliate with his electric violin — he often plays at The Pub, so he got his instrument, turned the amp as high as it would go, and started playing. He started with “This Is Me” from “The Greatest Showman.”
“I wanted to make a statement,” Neil said. “I’m proud of who I am, I'm comfortable in my own skin. You can hackle me, you can heckle these people, but this is us. We stand strong together.”

He then finished his short set with “Dancing Queen” at 11 p.m. to abide by the city’s noise ordinance rules. By that time, the group of protesters had left.
“They couldn’t handle the dancing queen,” Neil laughed.
His video has more than 8,000 views and his show of love was covered by CBS Miami and Yahoo — something he was not expecting.
“The best thing to do is kill with kindness,” he said. “Love trumps Trump.”
