Now that the new Wal-Mart in Oakland Park has been approved by the city commission, the estimated date for its opening could be in December of 2018.

That’s an estimate by Steve Wherry, the attorney who represents Wal-Mart.

Now that the city commission has approved the project, it’s up to Broward County to give final approval. “We’re hoping in April or May . . . depending on the county’s approval process,” he said. Wherry estimated that demolition of the old Kmart building, located at Oakland Park Boulevard and Northeast 6 Avenue, will occur sometime in June.

Once completed, the 121,345 square foot Super Center will sell groceries and general merchandise and have between 300 and 350 employees.

Wherry said there will be space available for tenants to lease but no separate liquor store or oil change center. There will be 510 parking spaces and the building will utilize solar panels to provide some of its energy needs.
