Miquel Brown’s 1983 dance hit “So Many Men, So Little Time” is a familiar gay anthem.
South Florida theater audiences might find themselves with a similar dilemma as nearly all of the regional theater companies have competing shows running over the same weekend. Here are some of the options:
‘Anna in the Tropics,’ Miami New Drama
The 20th-anniversary production of local playwright Nilo Cruz’s searing and steamy Pulitzer Prize-winning drama has been extended one more weekend through Feb. 12. Cruz directs this production at the Colony Theatre in Miami Beach. Tickets at MiamiNewDrama.org.
‘Anything Goes,’ The Wick
This is the last weekend to embark on a madcap sea voyage in Boca Raton with the passengers of the S.S. American in this dance-filled romp featuring the tunes of Cole Porter and choreography by Oren Korenblum. “Anything Goes” closes Feb. 12. Tickets at TheWick.org.
‘Rotterdam,’ Island City Stage
Island City Stage, one of the LGBT-centric companies in Wilton Manors, offers the critically acclaimed production of John Brittain’s story of a lesbian couple that copes with the decision by one partner to transition to a man. Running through Feb. 19. Tickets at IslandCityStage.org.
‘Honeymoon in Vegas,’ Slow Burn Theatre Co.
Slow Burn, the regional company in residence at the Broward Center, is back with another big Broadway musical, Jason Robert Brown’s stage adaptation of the 1992 dark comedy “Honeymoon in Vegas.” Catch this glitzy comedy through Feb. 19. Tickets at BrowardCenter.org.
‘The Science of Leaving Omaha,’ Palm Beach Dramaworks
Palm Beach Dramaworks in West Palm Beach is the home of the great American drama. The current production, a world premiere by Carter W. Lewis and directed by Bruce Linser, takes a hard look at a couple’s life in the Midwest. Closing Feb. 19. Tickets at PalmBeachDramaworks.org.
‘Cock,’ Empire Stage
On the flip side from “Rotterdam,” Mike Bartlett’s “Cock” at Empire Stage in Fort Lauderdale explores the tensions in a gay relationship when one of the men suddenly develops a sexual attraction to a woman – and acts on it. Playing through Feb. 26. Tickets at EmpireStage.com.
‘Escape to Margaritaville,’ Actors Playhouse
The Jimmy Buffett jukebox musical runs through Feb. 26 at Actors Playhouse in Coral Gables. Escape to islands and sing along to “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” “Margaritaville,” “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere,” “Fins,” “Volcano” and more. Tickets at ActorsPlayhouse.org.
‘SlammerGirlz,’ The Foundry
Ronnie Larsen's latest production is Patrick Cuccaro's musical, “Slammer Girlz,” a hilarious musical spoof of those hideous female prison movies from the ‘60s. The girls rarely get loose, but keep an eye on your valuables. Through March 5 at the Foundry. Tickets at RonnieLarsen.com.
‘Good People,’ Maltz Jupiter Theatre
The Maltz excels at big Broadway musicals, but occasionally slips plays into the schedule. David Lindsay-Abaire’s Tony-nominated comedy, running through Feb. 26, takes a look at the clash between a woman’s working-class dreams and the privilege of her affluent friends. Tickets at JupiterTheatre.org.
