OAKLAND PARK, Fl. (August 6, 2013) – AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is opening its newest domestic AHF Healthcare Center on August 7 in Oakland Park, Florida. The facility in Broward County will offer advice from HIV experts and opportunities for client-centered, specialized treatment and care for people living with HIV/AIDS. The medical staff at the clinic includes career HIV specialists Dr. Robert Helgar, Dr. Michael Cuenca and Dr. Maureen Greenwood. Dr. Helgar also specializes in the treatment of transgender patients.
The new clinic will be hosting an Open House at the clinic on Friday, August 9 from 5:30 – 8:00 pm where the public will have an opportunity to meet the providers and ask questions about the services offered at the facility.
As of April of this year, 16,856 people over the age of 13 – about one third of them women – are living with HIV in Broward County, according to the Florida Department of Health Bureau of HIV. Of those, 245 were newly diagnosed with HIV and 106 were newly diagnosed with AIDS. In 2009, Broward County ranked 2nd in Florida for highest HIV prevalence after Miami-Dade.
“The first step to slowing and ultimately stopping the spread of HIV in South Florida is getting tested regularly and remaining aware of your status,” said Michael Kahane, AHF’s Bureau Chief for the U.S. Southern Region. “This new addition to the Oakland Park community will give Broward County residents the opportunity to not only do that, but also receive expert, patient-focused care and affordable treatment. The tens of thousands of people living with HIV and AIDS in this county are not alone – we are with you in this fight.”
