Tonight the first openly gay contestant on “American Idol” competes for fans’ votes for the fourth week. But can MK Nobilette survive? For the past two weeks she’s landed in the bottom 3 barely escaping elimination.
Last week she sang Train’s “Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)” and ended up in the bottom 2. Two weeks ago Nobilette landed in the bottom 3 after singing Allen Stone’s "Satisfaction.” The judge’s have praised Nobilette’s talent and voice, but said she needs to find a way to connect more with the audience.
Idol fans typically name themselves after their favorite contestant and Nobilette’s fans have taken to calling themselves “Nobles” on Twitter.
Last week on the show Nobilette revealed that has two adopted mothers, who split up when she was four years old, and now they both have girlfriends. Some ‘Idol’ fans took to Twitter to criticize Nobilette’s sexuality and family like this one:
The girl Mk on American Idol was adopted at age 4, by two gay females and she's from San Francisco but she was "born gay"? Yeah ok.— Elijah Miller (@_emilla7) March 6, 2014
Others mostly encouraged and praised Nobilette’s courage.
Besides her sexuality Nobilette has also recently made headlines for a reference she made to Justin Beiber.
When a reporter asked her which nickname she hates the most she replied, “Justin Bieber — because I don’t look like him, he looks like me! (Laughter) I looked like this before him!” In that same interview she later said “Plus, I don’t drive under the influence, I don’t… never mind, I won’t go there… I don’t skateboard under the influence, either.”
The singing and voting portion of “American Idol” airs tonight at 8 p.m. on FOX and the results show airs Thursday at 9 p.m.
