SFGN Interviews First Two Cast Offs From RuPaul’s Drag Race

Kelly Mantle and Magnolia Crawford

Kelly Mantle and Magnolia Crawford

Kelly Mantle

Mantle is an actress, a singer, songwriter, and actress, and now joins the line of ladies that are among the first to be asked to "Sashay Away" on "RuPaul's Drag Race" now in it's sixth season. Contributing writer Michael Cook spoke with Kelly about how it feels to be the first one off, why she and Gia Gunn will probably not be friends, and her new single “Eliminated.”

How does it feel to be the first one voted off?

I'm having tons of fun with it!  Some queens are in it to win it, I'm in it for a minute.  When life eliminates you, make e-lemonade.  Which goes great with bacon! (LOL). And porkchops.  Speaking of, Porkchop and I are going to breakfast together this morning at an all-you-can-eat buffet, because you know I'll eat anything with a sneeze guard over it. Well...except fish.

What would've been your best challenge if you'd stayed longer?

The acting challenge, Snatch game, the comedy challenge, the singing challenge. Pretty much any challenge that has nothing to do with sewing!

Did you become fast friends with anyone else? Enemies? Frenemies?

Vivacious and I had an instant connection. I have mad love for that one.  Ummm...obviously Gia and I did not become friends.  I don't trust any queen that can't look me in the eye.  Or...maybe she was looking me in the eye.  Hard to tell.

Anything you would do differently?

Yeah-use a glue gun instead of trying to sew.  I thought I would get props for actually using a sewing machine since it was a "sewing challenge."  I didn't realize it was called a "glue gun challenge."

What's next for you?

I just released my new single and music video.  It's called "Eliminated."  You can buy it on iTunes and watch the video on YouTube.  I'm starring in a movie called "Confessions of a Womanizer" with Gary Busey and C. Thomas Howell, which is premiering at the Oscar-affiliated Cinequest Film Festival in March.  I've got lots of new music being released this year.  Keep up with me on Facebook (/kellymantlefanpage), Twitter (thekellymantle) and my website (www.kellymantle.com).

Magnolia Crawford

Crawford came onto the scene of "RuPaul's Drag Race" direct from Seattle, WA. With a nose contoured "for the gods" and personality to spare, Magnolia was ready to show the other queens that she could bring the same winning style as last year's winner (also a Seattle queen) Jinkx Monsoon, when Ru asked her to "Sashay Away.”

How does it feel to be the second voted off?

I'm actually happy to be the second one gone. They say, the first is the worst, the second is the best! Besides, I can mention every single queen voted off of every season first or second, as well as the Top 3. The queens in the middle always end up getting forgotten.

Do you think you came across harsh during the runway critique?

I have a confession; I actually did not watch the episode where I was told to "sashay away.” I probably won't ever watch it actually. From what I understand, everything that the editors portrayed me as saying, I actually did say. I think I'm happy that I at least will be remembered for being on the show. I may not be remembered for the right reasons, but I certainly will be remembered.

Why not watch?

To be honest, I'm really not comfortable watching myself on television. I like to be in charge of my own editing and don't really like being portrayed on television unless it's really my choice.

What were your favorite and least favorite parts?

My favorite part of the show was definitely meeting all of the other girls. Every one of them is so talented and I am lucky to be a part of what we all do for a living, as well as the show. My least favorite part — everything else.

That may answer my next question; would you do the show again?

I'll just say this; my biggest regret is not keeping my runway dress. I actually threw it away! I should have just kept it and sold it on eBay!

What's next for you?

Well, I have a YouTube channel that I am very proud of, you can find it under "Magnoliaisme" on YouTube. I am trying to do a lot of work on that and put up lots of content, silly videos, things like that. I'm also working on a project with (recording artist) Adam Barta, and I'm really excited for that also. I really appreciate you speaking with me as well; thanks so much for not blacklisting me after my episode!
