The South Florida Gay News joins the world in praising the life and mourning the passing of Congressman John Lewis, a national treasure and civil rights icon.

The South Florida LGBT community has lost one of its treasured members. Terry DeCarlo, 57, passed away Monday, Jan. 27, at Memorial Regional Hospital, after being treated for stage 4 face and neck cancer over the past few months.

Barbara Ellen Kelly passed June 24 at her home in Hallandale Beach, Florida. Barbara, Barb, or Kelly, as she was popularly known, was born in New York City on May 28, 1936. Barbara lived in Brooklyn, Rockaway and Woodside Queens as a child and young adult.  

Two of Roy Rollins’ favorite past times were the beach and the bars. According to friends he loved the sun, and he loved his drinks. Rollins’ friends also remember his unwavering kindness and generosity. 

Jeanette "Jen" Mojica, a longtime South Florida LGBT community activist, passed away Sept. 14.

Often the topics I choose to write about prove difficult to research, but sometimes I find myself with too many directions to turn in.  That was the case when last year I did a story about Dr. David Acer, the Jensen Beach dentist that allegedly infected several of his patients with HIV in the late 1980s.
