Over the weekend, State Representative Carlos Guillermo Smith (FL-D) got the birthday present of his lifetime. His longtime partner, Jerick Mediavilla, proposed while the couple attended Pride.

Mediavilla popped the question at the Orlando Come Out With Pride festival on Saturday, October 13, Florida Politics reports. Mediavilla reportedly surprised Smith by getting down on one knee at the Walt Disney Amphitheater, which was painted in rainbow colors.

“I couldn’t be happier to have the freedom to marry the man of my dreams,” Guillermo Smith told The Advocate

According to Ida Eskamani, the proposal was in the works since June and Pride organizers helped Mediavilla arrange everything.

As noted by Florida Politics, Guillermo Smith used to be the Legislative Director for Equality Florida, fighting for marriage equality. He currently chairs the Legislative Progressive Caucus in the state House of Representatives. He is described by The Advocate as one of Florida’s most prominent LGBT leaders.

"From the beginning, people here celebrate diversity even undergoing adversity, and for the first time in my now 37 years, I feel free to love openly and have an entire city celebrate that love I grew up hiding to avoid offending people," Mediavilla said. "So I wanted to share this with Orlando, out of gratitude showing me how to finally love unconditionally."

The couple sealed the engagement with an embrace and a kiss.
