Members of the Westboro Baptist Church are taking to social media this week to show their support for the New York Mets' second baseman Daniel Murphy, who came under fire recently for his controversial views on gay people, Newsweek reports.

The "God Hates Fags" organization, which has long protested the LGBT community and is also known for picketing the funerals of soldiers, released a statement and said it would boycott the Mets game against the Royals Wednesday to "publicly decry the fact that the state of New York is wholly given over to Sodomite filth, in daily defiance of God Almighty and his Word." The WBC goes on to call the Big Apple the home of the gay rights movement in the U.S. but, highlights Murphy's comments as a "small squeak in that miasma of foul matter known as New York City."

"WBC will be there with bells on to prop up and Biblically supplement Daniel Murphy's meager efforts and thereby again remind New York and America that their doom is imminent a la Sodom & Gomorrah," the group said.

Earlier this year, Murphy made remarks about Billy Bean, a former baseball player who was the first pro to come out as a gay (after he retired).

"I disagree with his lifestyle. I do disagree with the fact that Billy is a homosexual," Murphy said at the time.
