When Matthew Mitcham won the gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics, he not only shattered records but also won over hearts.

The International Swimming Hall of Fame has given the out Australian diver his due.

The LGBT Olympic winner, Mitcham, was inducted in Fort Lauderdale.

“In China, eight is a lucky number, and I know China was hoping to win all eight diving gold medals in Beijing 2008,” said Mitcham to OutSports.

The Olympic moment for Mitcham in Beijing will live on in LGBT sports history. In May 2008, he came out in the open, and he participated in the Olympics as his boyfriend watched from the stands.

Mitcham's gold-winning dive garnered the greatest rating ever thanks to the emotional support. The record remained unbroken until the Tokyo Games in 2021.
