It may have been an up-and-down 2014 for Michael Sam, the first athlete to be drafted in the NFL to come out as gay, but he's starting off the new year with a bang: the football player is reportedly engaged to his boyfriend Vito Cammisano.
TMZ reports that Sam, 25, has been on vacation with Cammisano, who he's been with since college, in Europe and that's where the magic happened. But it's unclear who asked whom, but a friend of Cammisano, who famously kissed Sam on TV when he was drafted into the NFL last year (which infuriated ultra conservatives all over the country), is already congratulating the couple about the engagement.
"People, he is officially off the market!!!!! My beautiful friend @vitcamm is getting married!!!!!!! (AHHHHHHHHH!) I love you so much Vit. SO damn excited...so ready to celebrate! @mikeysam52 #vitoisengaged," the friend, who TMZ says was on the University of Missouri swim team with Cammisano, allegedly wrote on what appears to be Instagram.
TMZ notes that Sam allegedly "liked" the comment.
Page Six corroborates TMZ's report, saying a source told the publication of Sam's engagement. Page Six also points out that the couple got engaged in Rome and that they've been in vacationing in Europe since Dec. 30, visiting Spain and Italy.
Page Six reports the men were in Vatican City on Wednesday, Sam's 25th birthday.
Sam and Cammisano both attended the University of Missouri together.
