Miami Marlins pitcher Jarred Cosart, under investigation by Major League Baseball for gambling, tweeted pop singer Justin Bieber is a ‘fag.’
In a back-and-forth with a former teammate, Cosart was attempting to insult Canada during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia by tweeting the country claimed “that fag bieber.”
Cosart has since deleted his Twitter account and is battling to survive a MLB probe and earn a roster spot with the Marlins. Miami opens the regular season Monday against Atlanta.
Pitching in Jupiter, Fla. Wednesday at Miami’s spring training camp, Cosart answered questions from reporters concerning allegations that he gambled on baseball.
“Never have, never will bet on baseball,” Cosart told the Sun Sentinel from inside the Marlins’ clubhouse at Roger Dean Stadium.
On the diamond, Cosart pitched six scoreless innings in the Marlins’ 8-0 win over the Washington Nationals. The 24-year-old right-handed pitcher said he was confident of no wrong doing concerning his gambling activity and had spoken to MLB’s investigators about his Twitter account.
Cosart was traded to Miami from the Houston Astros in a three-player deal on July 31, 2014. He was a member of the Astros at the time of his tweet about Bieber.
Bieber, 21, a Canadian national, is often the punchline of jokes about male masculinity. Just recently the pop star was the subject of a roast on Comedy Central in which celebrities gleefully lined up to take their shots.
“He has over 60 million followers on Twitter, and has 40 million on Grindr,” joked actor Kevin Hart.
