The virus that causes AIDS can hide in the bone marrow, avoiding drugs and later awakening to cause illness, according to new research that could point the way toward better treatments for the disease.

Finding that hide-out is a first step, but years of research lie ahead.

Dr. Kathleen Collins of the University of Michigan and her colleagues report in this week’s edition of the journal Nature Medicine that the HIV virus can infect long-lived bone marrow cells that eventually convert into blood cells.

Mexico City Legalizes Gay Marriage

Throngs of Mexico City gay and lesbian couples registered for marriage licenses Thursday, the day Latin America’s first gay-marriage law took effect.

The first gay weddings will take place within a week to 10 days, after the paperwork is processed.

Mexico City’s legislature approved the first law explicitly giving gay marriages the same status as heterosexual ones in December. The change will allow same-sex couples to adopt children, apply for bank loans together, inherit wealth and be included in the insurance policies of their spouse, rights they were denied under civil unions allowed in the city.

“This is great, it is a feeling of relief, of celebration, everything,’’ said Daniel Ramos, 20, a medical student planning to marry his boyfriend, Temistocles Villanueva, on March 12.

“For Latin America, this is not only a precedent, but an example to follow,’’ he added.

For now the law applies only to residents of Mexico City, though a marriage performed in one Mexican state must be recognized in the rest of the country.

On Wednesday, March 10 from 7-9pm, Bliss Spa at W Fort Lauderdale invites the LGBT community for a mid-week night of pampering with complimentary ‘homme’ improvement oxygen blasts, hand massages, champagne and hors d’eouvres.

Guests who book treatments during the event will receive a 20% discount at the upscale spa. At 9pm, the party moves to Whiskey Blue for Indulge Wednesday’s. Serving $5 signature cocktails until 10pm, Indulge is the LGBT community’s hottest Wednesday night party. The first 75 guests to arrive at Whiskey Blue from the Bliss party will receive complimentary cocktails from 9-10pm.

Boston: Also will celebrate its 40th Pride this year. Boston is known more for tea parties than gay pride but that shouldn’t be the case! This early pioneer of gay marriage has a week long festival kicking off Friday June 4, with a flag raising at City Hall, the AIDS Walk on June 6, and a whole lot of fun before it ends on Sunday June 13. Please visit for more information.

No Pride in Tallahassee

A new ranking by an LGBT advocacy group rates the Sunshine State Number 47 out of 51 when it comes to equality for its gay citizens.

The privately-funded organization eQualityGiving places Florida near dead last among the 50 states and the District of Columbia when it comes to promoting LGBT equality.

This number is especially notable since Florida ranks among the top 10 states for donations made to national, state and local LGBT organizations.

“We have the money, but we need a different strategy to change the dynamics,” says Jim Stork of Wilton Manors, who serves on the advisory board of eQualityGiving.
