Despite the challenging climate for newspapers, a Broward County attorney and gay media entrepreneur has announced his intention to launch a newspaper for South Florida’s LGBT community. The first issue of the South Florida Gay News will be published around January 25. According to The Miami Herald, criminal defense attorney Norm Kent started the Express Gay News in 1999, which he sold in 2003 to Window Media, which renamed the newspaper the South Florida Blade. That publication and others, such as the Washington Blade and the Southern Voice, shut down abruptly last month after parent company Window Media filed for bankruptcy. The South Florida Gay News, which will be based in Wilton Manors and have print and online versions, will include columnists such as Wayne Besen of the advocacy group Truth Wins Out; he grew up in Broward County. The newspaper will compete with another publication launched in South Florida in the wake of the Window Media closings, according to the Herald.“Kent's news operation will compete directly with the well-known Mark's List brand, a South Florida-based online site that launched its own gay newspaper, Florida Agenda, immediately after South Florida Blade closed in November,” the Herald reported.

Live Life to Its Fullest

The most memorable person I ever met was my cousin by marriage, Roger Alan Weinstein.  Roger never had much money, was never elected to public office, never won a major award, never appeared on People magazine or reality TV and never had any children (a mark of success in our society).  And he died at a relatively young age, before his 50th birthday.  But in spite of all that, Roger Alan Weinstein got more out of his life than do most people who live to be 100.  Roger was a true Renaissance man who used his considerable talents to make his world a better place.  He  was an active member of Gay Spirit Visions, composed music and poetry, and played the piano and the bassoon for various musical groups in the Atlanta area.  He enjoyed the company of his family, his lovers, his friends, and the community around him.  In short, Roger lived life to the fullest.

HIV Men Prone to Heart Disease

A study that will appear in an upcoming issue of AIDS presents data that suggests HIV positive men have a significantly higher risk of plaque accumulation in the coronary arteries than do HIV negative men. This trend is a particularly important finding since people with HIV are living longer because of HIV medications.
