The Miami Herald Reports Denise King, a working mom turned gay-rights crusader after the Fort Lauderdale shooting death of her 17-year-old son, Simmie Williams Jr., died New Year's Eve of a heart attack.  King, 40, never knew who killed Simmie on Feb. 22, 2008, in a vacant lot off Sistrunk Boulevard.

President Obama recently named Amanda Simpson to be a Senior Technical Advisor to the Commerce Department. In a statement, Simpson, a member of the National Center for Transgender Equality's board of directors, said that "as one of the first transgender presidential appointees to the federal government, I hope that I will soon be one of hundreds, and that this appointment opens future opportunities for many others."

The Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, in association with the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida, presents A Women’s Empowerment Luncheon, the first of a bi-monthly program showcasing successful Chamber Members who are professional women.
