Participants will cycle 165 miles to Key West

Fort Lauderdale, FL;  – This Friday, January 8th, approximately 500 bicyclists will depart Miami in The SMART Ride, a two day, 165 mile historic ride to Key West to raise awareness for HIV/AIDS in the state of Florida. South Florida has one of the highest new infection rates in the nation and these are most prominent in women and teens.

Obama Repeals AIDS Travel Ban

President Barack Obama the U.S. will overturn a 22-year-old travel and immigration ban against people with HIV. The order will be finalized on Monday, January 4, 2010, Obama said, completing a process begun during the Bush administration. The U.S. has been among a dozen countries that bar entry to travelers with visas or anyone seeking a green card based on their HIV status.

Annise Parker, Houston's Openly Gay Mayor

According to the Associated Press, Houston, Texas is now the nation’s largest city with a gay mayor. Annise Parker has been sworn in as Houston mayor, officially making her city the nation's largest to be led by an openly gay person.

Same-Sex Marriage Legal in New Hampshire

Effective January 1, 2010, New Hampshire becomes the fifth state in the country to legalize same-sex marriage.  The state passed marriage equality legislation in 2009, expanding upon rights already extended to same-sex couples through civil unions legislation in 2008.
