For millennia, people of all faiths have worshipped their God with music: The Book of Psalms is not only a collection of poetry, but also Hebrew songs of praise.
Pope Gregory was inspired to notate plaintive chants that would echo in immense Gothic cathedrals for centuries. Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frederick Handel, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and other classical masters contributed scores of glorious masses, cantatas and oratorios. Today, it’s not uncommon to hear folk, gospel, jazz and pop music in sanctuaries around the world.
At Christ Lutheran Church on Oakland Park Blvd., our congregation celebrates the rich and diverse liturgy of the church each and every week. Our services include the classic hymns of the Protestant tradition with a sung liturgy and open communion. The experience is diverse and varied, incorporating the great hymns of Martin Luther, Charles Wesley and Ralph Vaughan Williams; contemporary and traditional mass settings; and special music by our volunteer choir and handbells.
Enthusiastic congregational singing and choral anthems are accompanied on the church’s 13-rank Zimmer pipe organ, a beautifully constructed and voiced instrument that fills the bright sanctuary with soaring melodies and rich harmonies, and a Yamaha baby grand piano.
Christ Lutheran Church offers a traditional worship experience that is at once familiar to people who grew up in the church before the latest trends of praise bands and projector screens on the walls.
And, as a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, Christ Lutheran Church is a reconciling congregation that welcomes our LGBTQ brothers and sisters and their families and friends. We recognize that many LGBTQ people of faith have had complicated, even painful experiences with “religion” and “the church,” but our congregation believes every person is a child of God deserving of His grace.
If you appreciate music and liturgical worship, well, Christ Lutheran Church would love to become your new church home. Our members invite you to join us each Sunday morning at 10 a.m. and, if you especially enjoy making music, there are many opportunities, as well. The choir rehearses before services each Sunday morning at 9 a.m. and singers of all levels and abilities are encouraged. Our handbell ringers practice periodically and soloists and instrumentalists are featured at special services and holidays.
Together, let’s make that joyful noise to the Lord.
Christ Lutheran Church is located at 1955 Oakland Park Blvd. in Oakland Park. Services are held at 10 a.m. on Sundays. For more information, go to ChristLutheranFL.org or Facebook.com.
