To celebrate Independence Day last week, 2016 presidential GOP hopeful Ted Cruz (R-TX) went on an anti-gay rant at the Rock Springs Church in Milner, Ga., where he condemned the Supreme Court's landmark ruling last month, legalizing same-sex marriage in all 50 states.

According to Right Wing Watch, Cruz said he hopes the high court's decision will spark a backlash and that it starts a "raging inferno."

"It is my hope that that marriage decision serves as a spark to start a fire that becomes a raging inferno and an awakening that sweeps this country as the body of Christ rise up to defend the values that have built America into this great nation that we are," he said, according to the conservative website Red Kudzu.

Cruz also said a number of Republican politicians responded to the gay marriage ruling by "publicly issuing critical statements and privately going in the backroom popping champagne and celebrating."
