This Christmas blunder may reveal a need to separate church and state.

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus and Co-Chair Sharon Day released a Christmas-themed message which some say compares President-Elect Donald Trump to Jesus Christ.

“Merry Christmas to all! Over two millennia ago, a new hope was born into the world, a Savior who would offer the promise of salvation to all mankind,” the statement read. “Just as the three wise men did on that night, this Christmas heralds a time to celebrate the good news of a new King. We hope Americans celebrating Christmas today will enjoy a day of festivities and a renewed closeness with family and friends.”

People quickly saw the connection between Trump and Jesus and took to Twitter to voice their concerns.

“Sorry, I'm still not seeing how the GOP and @realDonaldTrump's own WH chief of staff weren't comparing Trump to Jesus. Christ isn't ‘new,’” said AMERICAblog Founder and Editor John Aravosis on Twitter.

BuzzFeed asked RNC Spokesman Sean Spicer about the comparison, but he said the question was “offensive.”

“I hope you are kidding,” he wrote. “Christ is the King in the Christian faith. To ask this on Christmas is frankly offensive.”
