A North Carolina Republican representative is reacting to rumors that "American Idol" star Clay Aiken will run for Congress, NewsObserver.com reports.

Rep. Renee Ellmers told North Carolina radio station 105.9 WMAL recently her thoughts on Aiken’s alleged political endeavors.

"Apparently, his performing career is not going so well. He’s very bored," she said. "I’ll tell you, I’m a little hurt. I think he has an incredible voice and he’s incredibly talented, and I’d rather have his support."

The hosts asked Ellmers if she voted for Aiken, who is openly gay and rumored to run as a Democrat, while he was competing on "American Idol."

"As we know, he didn’t really fare all that well. He was runner-up," she said. "He also didn’t win on ["Celebrity Apprentice"].. so I guess the next step is Congress. You know, we don’t have a very high approval rating so I guess the bar’s been lowered for him."

It was reported last month that the singer allegedly met with Democratic political advisers to help him put a political/exploratory team together.

If Aiken does run, he would be challenging Ellmers, who represents North Carolina’s 2nd Congressional District.

It’s been reported the pop star will make an official announcement in February.
