Mark your calendar for Monday, June 14 for the Alibi’s annual Turnabout Fundraiser. event has been the official kickoff party for the Stonewall Street Festival for 13 years. Last year, to add a bit of fun in the name of charity, organizers Scot Newell and Dale Madison decided to turn it into a drag pageant: the Miss Alibi Turnabout Pageant.
“Turnabout is basically a group of guys get- ting dressed up in drag for a charity event, that are not professional drag queens at all,” said Scot Newell of Great Scot! Productions, based in Oakland Park. “It’s usually the bartenders that participate. The audience tips the performers, and that money goes to charity. It makes everybody look ridiculous for a good cause.”
There are at least eight pageant contestants, but at least another ten people are doing jobs in support of the show. One of the Alibi’s managers will appear as a special guest. A very special guest, in fact—namely, Liza Minnelli. And the video jockey will appear as his favorite country crooner, Patsy Cline.
This year’s “Battle of the Bitches” theme promises a lot of good-willed fun and competition. As far as Sewell and Madison know, it is the longest- running, most successful turnabout event in Fort Lauderdale.A turnabout is when non-drag performers are encouraged to put on a wig and strut their stuff onstage.
“Most of the more famous bartenders in town have donned a wig and crossed the Alibi stage at one point or another,” said Sewell of the mock pageant featuring the Alibi staff. “Last year, we had a spectacular turnout and raised over $6,000 for the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. This year we are aiming to go bigger and better.”
According to Sewell, they intend to reach $10,000.The funds raised this year will be divided equally and donated to the Broward House and the Poverello Food Bank. Nikki Adams will host a hot red-carpet event at 8 p.m. The pageant itself will begin at 9 p.m., and contestants will be judged in three categories in order to win the coveted crown of “Miss Alibi Turnabout.”
Ultimat Vodka is the proud corporate sponsor of the event, while car service will be provided by Star Electric Cars. Costumes and accessories will be provided by Lace to Lust Boutique.
The event promises comedy, competition, and outrageous fun, while raising funds to help members of our community.
