Head down to Fort Lauderdale Beach today for the Great American Beach Party. Our primary tourist season may run from Thanksgiving to Easter, but this Memorial Day weekend tradition marks the official start of summer. Take in the classic car show, sand castle contest, food vendors, live bands and DJs, too. And, of course, for the best sights of the day, stop by Sebastian Beach to see some greased up bods. The free festivities run from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. For info, go to FortLauderdale.gov/GABP.

Holiday
It’s Memorial Day and you know what that means — it’s the official start of summer here in South Florida. You could salute our veterans at one of the many ceremonies around the region, but we prefer to raise a glass to our wounded warriors and fallen heroes, both past and present. Celebrate with a festive cookout and drinks with friends beside the pool or visit your favorite watering holes on Wilton Drive and in Miami-Dade for happy hour specials and promotions through the holiday weekend.

Sexuality
We all know “reality TV” can sometimes be anything but “real.” Since his big network interview, Bruce Jenner’s transition from male to female has encouraged public conversation about the emotions and issues felt by transgender people. On the fourth Tuesday of each month, the Pride Center at Equality Park, 2040 N. Dixie Hwy. in Wilton Manors, hosts a transgender education forum beginning at 7 p.m. Learn more at this month’s meeting. For info, go to PrideCenterFlorida.org.
