Nightlife for the Week of May 11, 2011

Bring Out the Wilton Manors Welcome Wagon

This weekend, the eyes of the world will be on Wilton Manors—well, the eyes of hundreds of international travel agents in town for the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association convention. The rainbow flags are going up and the gay bars, restaurants and stores are all getting one last polish in anticipation of their arrival.

While all our favorite watering holes and nightspots along Wilton Drive are sure to be busy all weekend, the centerpiece of the convention is an outdoor public concert by dance queen Kristine W. in Hagen Park. I had the pleasure of interviewing the singer several years ago for another publication and was immediately struck with her easygoing personality. Not only is she an amazingly talented artist, she manages to juggle the responsibilities of motherhood and family life. She’s definitely a diva, sans the attitude.

Kristine W. will take the stage at 9:30 p.m. on Friday, May 13, but plan to arrive early and check out the international travel expo from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. And don’t forget to offer a warm welcome to all the IGLTA members who will be spreading the buzz about Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors around the globe.

Here’s a look at some of the other big events planned in conjunction with the weekend in Fort Lauderdale:

Thursday, May 12

Rosie’s Bar & Grill is always a popular destination with a happy hour crowd that rivals just about any other stop on the Wilton Drive strip. Kick off the big IGLTA weekend tonight with $2 Miller Lite bottles beginning at 7 p.m.

Friday, May 13

Boom, the popular local nightclub in the Shoppes of Wilton Manors, promises the biggest dance party the town has seen in a long time. We’re not superstitious in the least—it’s Friday the 13—and we’re betting you’ll get lucky tonight.

Saturday, May 14

SideLines, South Florida’s sports bar at 2031 Wilton Drive, celebrates it’s fifth anniversary all weekend. To mark the occasion, there are several $5 specials all weekend long, including 2-4-1 Three Olives vodka cocktails and domestic longnecks or get a little crazy with $5 shot buckets from open to close.

Sunday, May 15

The Manor always plans big weekends with top DJs and fun themed parties. Tonight, in the Epic Nightclub, Alyson Calagna will be in the booth for the official IGLTA tea dance today beginning at 6 p.m. There’s no cover. You’ll find the action at 2345 Wilton Drive.

Monday, May 16

If our international visitors wander up NE 6th Ave. from Wilton Drive, they’ll get a real taste of Americana at Scandals Saloon. On Mondays, the popular Country Western bar offers free dance lessons. Maybe some of the guys and gals will put on some boots and give the two-step a try.

Tuesday, May 17

Fox TV’s “Glee” isn’t just an American phenomenon and locals and our guests alike can enjoy the latest episode at Matty’s on the Drive, 2426 Wilton Drive. There are 2-4-1 drink specials during the show, so get your “gleek” on and sing along.
