When we think of circuit parties, images of young, ripped, sweaty men dancing on the beach or poolside tends to come to mind. But, the great thing about Fort Lauderdale is there’s a scene for everyone. This weekend, more than 800 men are expected in town for a different kind of circuit party, A Celebration of Friends, an annual event for mature older men.
The “boys” will start arriving Wednesday, June 22, and they have a full schedule of pool parties and events planned. During the day, you’ll find the action at the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Airport, but as the sun sets the party will be moving to Wilton Manors with a shuttle running to popular restaurant and bar Tropics. SideLines Sports Bar hosts the official opening party Friday night and Sunday’s pool party will be at the Cheston House resort on the beach.
This is a celebration for a cause, too, with proceeds from the event benefitting The Pride Center and Tuesday’s Angels. Visit CelebrationOfFriends.org for more information and a full schedule.
In addition to A Celebration of Friends, here’s a look at some of the other highlights of the week to come in South Florida:
Thursday, June 23
Miami-Dade dudes looking for hot dancers will no longer have to take a roadtrip up I-95. Tonight, Johnny’s, the popular Fort Lauderdale go-go bar, opens a southern outpost at 60 NE 14th St. in downtown Miami. The grand opening weekend kicks off tonight with DJ Daisy D. with shows beginning at 6 p.m. daily.
Friday, June 24
Raven, the latest alum of Logo TV’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and Drag U,” makes an appearance in South Florida at Miami’s Sugar, 2301 SW 32nd Ave. She’ll be performing, along with resident divas T.P. Lords and Sasha Lords.
Saturday, June 25
On Saturdays, the ladies of Lips present Taboo, the forbidden show. Just think “drag queens gone wild” and you’ll get the gist of this over-the-top performance hosted by Diva. Arrive early for dinner, but the girls take it off at 11:30 p.m. Lips is located at 1421 Oakland Park Blvd. in Oakland Park.
Sunday, June 26
Former “Queer Eye” culture guy Jai Rodriguez has been all over South Florida with Summer Shorts and his solo “Dirty Little Secrets” show, and tonight at 8 p.m. he’ll be doing a little cabaret at The Manor, 2345 Wilton Drive. Order some dinner and enjoy music by Jai, pianist Rick Leonard and singers Ellen and Lisa.
Monday, June 27
After a hot weekend, cool off at underwear night at the Cubby Hole, the cozy little bear bar tucked away in a strip mall at 823 N. Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale. Men in boxers or briefs get 2-4-1 well and drafts from 8 p.m. to close.
Tuesday, June 28
On Miami Beach, there’s no place like swanky martini lounge MOVA, 1625 Michigan Ave., just off Lincoln Road. On Tuesday, play drag bingo with Geraldine beginning at 8 p.m. Proceeds benefit local HIV/AIDS service organization Care Resource. Everybody’s a winner!
