Where the “A-Gays” Are….
In the city of Palm Beach, Florida, that infamous enclave of exorbitant wealth that Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff once flocked to during the winter months, there are several places to find the “A-Gays,” members of that elusive social strata to which so many South Florida residents aspire.
Obviously, you can start on ritzy Worth Avenue, where even a platinum card won’t elicit much of a response from the tony sales consultants, who work in the high end boutiques.
While you wait for the American Express black card to arrive, here’s the place in Palm Beach to mingle with the rich and powerful and their boyfriends: the legendary Colony Hotel. Thursday nights are the unofficial gay night at the hotel bar. The cocktails aren’t cheap and the bartenders will probably smirk when you ask for your chip—they just don’t do that there—but the experience could be, as Visa likes to put it, priceless.
For another priceless experience, or just to impress your date, head up to the Colony to see Tony winner Christine Ebersole, who will be appearing in the hotel’s swanky Royal Room March 29 through April 9. If you haven’t experienced the white glove service and prix fixe three-course gourmet cuisine, this is the show to catch in one of the nation’s most prominent cabaret restaurants. Tickets are $65 - $80 for the show or $110 - $125 for dinner also.
Meanwhile, there’s plenty of action a little closer to home. Here’s a look at some of the highlights of the upcoming week in South Florida:
Thursday, March 17
Nearly every bar in town is celebrating St. Patrick’s Day tonight, but the only place you’re likely to discover a real live leprechaun is Johnny’s, 1116 W. Broward Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. All month, the popular dancer bar is featuring the world’s tiniest entertainers and tonight they’ll be slathering on the green body paint. Will you be the one to find the pot ‘o gold?
Friday, March 18
Looking for a “full-sized” man? You’ll find him tonight at Dude’s, the closest thing Fort Lauderdale has to a beach bar. Located at 3270 NE 23rd St. in Fort Lauderdale, the bar features hot dancers, as well as live entertainment. Tony and Gloria will offer their song stylings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and then DJs Richie Rich and Frank Corr jump in the booth to provide hot beats for the dancers.
Saturday, March 19
The Manor brings in DJ David Knapp tonight, but he’s not all. Miss Richfield 1981, the title winner who has held on to her tiara for 30 years now, will also be performing at 8 p.m. Come early for some outrageous drag and then dance the night away at Wilton Manors’ popular entertainment complex at 2345 Wilton Drive.
Sunday, March 20
SideLines Sports Bar has long been an enthusiastic supporter of the Florida AIDS Walk and this year has been no exception as owners Laurie Whittaker and Marty Kildea have recruited a large team of walkers and plenty of pledges from local LGBT sports fans. SideLines is a great destination for a refreshing drink and an opportunity to congratulate Team SideLines after the walk. You’ll find the celebration at 2031 Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors.
