Matt's Datebook for the week of June 22, 2011

June sure has been the party month of the year. Orlando had Gay Days, Key West had Pride Fest and Wilton Manors had the Stonewall Pride. If you’re like me, you’re pretty burnt out from all mind blowing and wallet dwindling festivities. Let’s take it down a few notches this week and detox the liver.

Bill’s Filling Station down on Wilton Drive has the best hamburgers around. Last week, I went to Bill’s for the first time as a hungry customer, as opposed to a thirsty one and decided to order their quadruple burger. There are two things about me you might not know. One: my metabolism is so high I can eat anything and still look like a rail. Two: I’m a sucker for a delicious hamburger. When they brought the bad boy out, I immediately cut it in two, knowing there was no way something that big… well enough of the innuendo, you get the picture. Needless to say, this skinny mini finished the entire thing in five minutes. I found out afterwards that all of their burgers are called “crack burgers” and for good reason. I’ve been back four times since. I’m pretty sure I’m headed over there as soon as I get off of work.

The BankAtlantic Center is housing the “good girl gone bad” herself, Rihanna with special guest Cee Lo Green on July 14. Rihanna has had quite the metamorphosis over the course of her career and has emerged as a firey songstress. She started out as a bubbly islander girl, to a smash hit powerhouse, a stone-hard rock star and finally to the “loud” sadomasochist she is today. She’s currently best known for her controversial song “S&M” and from her earlier days, “Umbrella.” Cee Lo Green is no spring chicken himself. He used to be part of the group “Gnarles Barkley” a few years ago and had a hit we can all remember called, “Crazy.” Currently he is a mentor for the NBC music competition called “The Voice” and his hit, F**k “Forget You” is still on the charts today. Seeing these two in concert will definitely be a sight to see.

Alright, maybe you need a drink so much for taking it easy but you also want to have a few rounds of karaoke? Atomic Boom on a Monday and Tuesday is the place to be. They’ve got the best song selection in town and the audience is so animated and usually hammered that there’s no reason for butterflies to creep up in your stomach before you take the mic. I’ll recommend getting there early if you’d actually like to sing and not wait for 40 minutes before your name is called, but if your sole purpose is to make fun of listen to the other performers, then anytime after 9 is perfect. Don’t forget to tip your DJ and the bartender!
