Kirk Rubén knows how to have a good time, and he knows how to do it while wearing leather.
After all, he’s a part-time rodeo cowboy and was Mr. Ramrod 2013 Fort Lauderdale. The Wilton Manors resident is also a retired, professional classical ballet dancer and travels to different locations to teach kink and fetish workshops.
What all that means is – of course he’s the organizing force behind the “4th Annual Disney Leather Incursion,” whipping its way to Orlando in early November. His friend and “title brother,” Phoenix Pendragon, also helps Rubén with the event. Pendragon knows a thing or two about leather himself; he’s Central Florida Leatherman 2014.
Rubén calls the gathering a “leather version of Gay Days at Disney.” Gay Days at Walt Disney World is held every June and has become one of the biggest Pride-style events for LGBT individuals and allies.
Rubén’s event is scheduled to be held from November 2 through November 4.
“Incursion is a way for leather folk and leather friends to socialize outside of the bar and contest environment,” Rubén said, stressing that the gathering is a very casual one. “We just have a very fun-filled weekend of camaraderie.”
The first three incarnations drew between 20 and 50 people, he said. Ages ranged from the 20s into the 60s.
Attendees are mostly from South Florida, but Rubén already expects people this year from as far away as Missouri and California. His long-term hope is that the event will grow among leather, kink and fetish aficionados and become an annual tradition.
“People plan their vacations around it. It’s a perfect time of year to be in Orlando. The weather is cooler and you can wear leather gear to the parks,” Rubén said.
Rubén encourages people to wear their leather clothing.
“But it needs to remain family friendly,” he said. “No hoods or masks allowed. Leave the floggers and bondage equipment at the hotel for after hours. We encourage people to have a really good PG-fun time.”
Rubén will be wearing his leather kilt, “because it’s very comfortable,” and his title vest.
Those who join the fun can expect to visit three different parks together as a group – Magic Kingdom (Nov. 2); Epcot (Nov. 3); and Animal Kingdom (Nov. 4).
Rubén’s trying to get a group rate at the Courtyard Orlando Lake Buena Vista at Vista Centre, located at 8501 Palm Parkway. It’s a short distance from Disney Springs and the Disney theme parks.
However, Rubén said people are free to stay where they want, as there’s no official host hotel.
Which brings up another point he stresses firmly: The event is “not an official Disney event and isn’t sponsored or endorsed by the company or any Disney affiliation.” But there’s no disclaimer on the fun he expects to have with his fellow “incursioners.”
A typical day starts around 10 a.m. for a group photo, followed by time at one of the designated parks and then a meet-up for lunch. Then around 3 p.m. the group will meet up at another location (maybe at a ride or certain show) followed by a later meet up for dinner. People post what they are planning to do on the group’s Facebook page.
“Nobody’s pressured into having to do one thing or the other. Or to come for all three days,” Rubén said. “We just try to be the ringleaders.”
The Incursion coincides with the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, which is currently running through November 12.
“So if you’re a foodie, this is not to be missed,” Rubén said.
Rubén has created a Facebook group – search “Annual Leather Incursion” – for those who are interested in more information and updates.
“It will be a fun-filled weekend of magical memories and bonding with other wonderful leather and kink folk. It’s a casual event – no contests, no drama – just joy and memories of a lifetime,” Rubén said.
