One safe space just got threatened.
The Providence Youth Student Movement in Providence, Rhode Island, came across a hateful act of vandalism this week. The perpetrators stacked chairs on top of each other, opened all the drawers, rearranged office supplies and, worst — left a noose hanging on a hook attached to the ceiling.
The vandalism occurred between Sunday afternoon and Monday morning, according to PrYSM Executive Director Sarath Suong in a Facebook post.
“Maybe it was a prank, but IT IS NOT funny,” he wrote. “But I don't think it's a joke, I think we were sent a CLEAR message. But here's our message back: FUCK YOU.”
The center was founded in 2001 and has Queer & Trans Thursdays every week, which “creates safe spaces for queer and trans* people of color to advocate for ourselves, support our communities, organize for political empowerment, and build community,” according to their website.
Suong continued in his Facebook post pointing towards the vandals, the original message written in all capital letters but edited below for clarity.
“Fuck you. You will not intimidate us, you will not steer us away from our mission, you will never dampen our spirit. You have only motivated us even more. We will continue to fight for justice and defend our community, our families, and our people.”
He added: “Oh, and fuck you.”
PrYSM itself “organizes at the intersections of race, class, gender, and sexual orientation by centering youth, women, queer, and people of color leadership in our campaigns, our organization, and our communities.”
