PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The terms of an offer made by a prominent gay activist to settle a sexual assault case against him will remain confidential while a Lane County judge considers a request to release the information.
The Oregonian reports (http://is.gd/Kk36e4 ) 66-year-old Terry Bean and his former boyfriend are accused of having sex with a 15-year-old boy at a Eugene hotel in 2013.
Bean tried to resolve the case through a civil compromise, outlining a proposed settlement with the boy’s attorneys during a closed court session. Under a ruling by Circuit Judge Charles Zennache, a recording of that session has been kept sealed.
The Oregonian appealed the ruling, saying the public has a right to know the offer. But Bean’s attorneys say disclosing the settlement could sway potential jurors at trial.
