DALLAS (KDAF) -- DALLAS- 666 has been popping up all around Dallas, and police said they're investigating the case as a hate crime.

On Sunday, the Legacy of Love monument on Oak Lawn was vandalized with the satanic symbol.

"I heard about it this morning on the news and I wanted to come by and see it because I am a gay member of this community, and am very concerned with the safety of the community," Jeff Kenner said.

The 35-foot monument is an iconic landmark, and is a standing tribute to honor those who lost their lives battling AIDS. The Cathedral of Hope, a church that openly welcomes LGBT members, also had its driveway defaced by the demonic symbol.

"To have someone mark that in a hostile way is a reminder to us that we have not achieved full acceptance in society in a way that we would like," Cathedral of Hope Pastor Jim Mitulski said.

Pastor Mitulski isn't worried about the satanic symbol, as much as the message of hate that he believes is being spread. "We aren't angry, we are disappointed, and we are committed to praying for people who disagree with us. There are more mature ways to engage in conflict or disagreement," Mitulski explained.

Members of the church gathered to clean the monument and driveway. Dallas Police are asking for the public's help in finding those who are responsible for the vandalism.
