Santa Cruz, CA — Two people were jailed and police are seeking a warrant for a third after the beating of a gay man at a Pacific Avenue nightclub early Sunday that also led to a robbery and second fight.

Detectives are investigating the beating, which happened inside the Blue Lagoon on the 900 block of Pacific Avenue, as a hate crime, according to police spokesman Zach Friend.

"There is absolutely no excuse for targeting someone based on their sexual orientation," Friend said. "It is an unfortunate commentary that some haven't moved beyond this type of intolerance in our community." The victim, a Santa Cruz man in his early 30s, said he went with friends to the club Saturday night, but forgot something so he made the quick walk to his downtown home alone and then returned to the bar.
