A Democrat has not won statewide office in Texas in the past 20 years, but a pro-LGBT candidate is looking to change that.

Beto O’Rourke, a Texas Rep. from El Paso, has been challenging incumbent U.S. Senator Ted Cruz in the run-up to Election Day on Nov. 6, according to PinkNews. At $13 million, O’Rourke has raised more money than any Democrat ever to run in the state.

That total includes $6.7 million in the past three months. O’Rourke said that he does not take a single dime from special interests and only asks for money from voters, according to Business Insider.

According to the Texas Tribune, Cruz has not released new fundraising figures yet.

O’Rourke has also previously sponsored bills fighting against discrimination for LGBT students in school, according to OnTheIssues. He has also fought for equal pay on the basis of gender.

Cruz previously backed Roy Moore in his run for Senate, despite allegations he had molested underage girls and a track record of anti-LGBT behavior.

“Judge Moore has a lifelong passion for the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and he has the courage of his convictions,” Cruz said at the time. “In the Senate, we need reinforcements; we desperately need strong conservatives who will stand up to the Washington status quo.”
