It’s time to give praise to media that represents the LGBT community the right way.
On Tuesday, GLAAD announced 156 nominees over a span of 32 categories in both English and Spanish for the 28th Annual GLAAD Media Awards.
GLAAD, the world’s LGBT media advocacy organization, uses the annual awards to acknowledge and honor media for representation of the LGBT community, touching on HIV, trans issues, bisexuality and more.
"For nearly 30 years, the GLAAD Media Awards have set the bar for media representations of LGBTQ people," GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a press release. "At a time when progress is at a critical juncture, it is imperative that Hollywood tell more LGBTQ stories that reflect the community’s rich diversity – and build understanding that brings all communities closer together. This year's nominees have created images and storylines that challenge misconceptions and broaden understanding, accelerating acceptance and equality for LGBTQ people across the globe."
According to the GLAAD website, the Outstanding Reality Program category’s nominees all include transgender people, including ‘Transparent,’ ‘Modern Family’ and more.
Bisexual representation has also been recognized — The CW’s ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ is a nominee, and featured character Darryl Whitefeather revealing his bisexuality. Many other shows nominated also included bisexual characters.
HIV-positive gay representation is also covered within a span of nominees from ABC’s ‘How to Get Away with Murder’ to Showtime’s ‘Shameless.’
A few nominees took to social media to express their excitement — including Christian Music Artist Trey Pearson, who opened up about his homosexuality last year.
“Got the most wonderful news this morning that I have been nominated at the 28th Annual GLAAD Media Awards!” he wrote on Facebook. “Such a beautiful honor to be nominated for Outstanding Talk Show Episode, on The View. Aaaahhhh! (smiley face)”
The awards will be presented by Delta Air Lines, Hilton, Ketel One Vodka, Liberty Mutual Insurance and Wells Fargo.
The GLAAD Media Awards are set for April 1 at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. Later on May 6, the awards will continue at the New York Hilton Midtown.
