Remember the mom’s outrageous, anti-gay response to a birthday party invitation from a kid with two dads?
Turns out, it was all a hoax.
The response went viral on the Internet, as people criticized the mom for saying she would not subject her “innocent son” to their “lifestyle.” It turns out that the response was made up by two New York radio station morning show hosts.
It was said the two dads submitted the invitation to K-98.3, where the Morning Show with Steve Harper and Leeana Karlson posted it on the station’s Facebook on Feb. 12. The invitation soon received responses of disgust from listeners and people nationally, as the story circulated the Web and was covered by various media outlets.
The two morning show hosts came out to admit they fabricated the whole entire story. They said they were trying to “spur a healthy discourse on a highly passionate topic,” according to an apology note they wrote that was posted on the station’s website. K-98.3 management said in a statement they were unaware of the details being fabricated by Steve and Leeana and the hoax “was done without the knowledge of K-98.3 management or ownership.”
When news that the story was made up hit the Internet, people took to K-98.3’s Facebook with comments of disappointment and anger in the two for fabricating the story. Steve and Leeana have both been suspended.
“K-98.3 has been serving Long Island for over 25 years and we respect the important role we play in the lives of our listeners. We deeply value our relationship with our listeners and are committed to providing them with the highest level of service because they deserve the very best. I sincerely apologize for the actions of Steve and Leeana, their insensitivity to the hurt it may have caused anyone, and for the breach of trust these actions have caused”, said Dave Widmer, GM/Market Manager, Connoisseur Media Long Island, in a message from K-98.3 Management that was posted on K-98.3’s Facebook.
It has not been mentioned for how long Steve and Leeana will be suspended for, but there were many who posted on the Facebook page saying, regardless, the station had lost a loyal listener due to this incident.
