WASHINGTON - A Maryland man has been sentenced to more than 4 years in prison after prosecutors say he stabbed a transgender girl on a transit train in the nation's capital.

Twenty-five-year-old Reginald Klaiber of Greenbelt, Md., was sentenced Wednesday in District of Columbia Superior Court.

He pleaded guilty in January to assault with a dangerous weapon in a case deemed a hate crime.

U.S. Attorney Ronald Machen Jr. says Klaiber stabbed the 15-year-old girl in July "solely because of who she is" and that his office "will not tolerate hate-fueled violence" in Washington.

Prosecutors say Klaiber attacked the teen in broad daylight while they were on a train approaching a station in northeast Washington.

Prosecutors say Klaiber asked her if she was a boy and why she looked like a woman.
